Dear Members and Friends of NCCS,

Churches and the Gift of Family

Singapore’s declining total fertility rate is a complex challenge shaped by economic pressures, housing costs, work demands, childcare responsibilities and changing attitudes towards marriage and parenthood. Faced with these issues, the Christian community can play a meaningful role by supporting families and contributing to a society where having children is welcomed and valued.  Indeed, Psalm 127:3 reminds us that “Children are a heritage from the Lord, offspring a reward from him.”

First, churches can strengthen practical support for young families. Congregations can provide childcare during worship and church activities, organise parenting programmes, establish support networks for new parents and offer assistance to families facing financial or emotional difficulties. Such initiatives can complement government measures designed to make family life more manageable.

Second, churches can cultivate a culture that honours family life without placing pressure or guilt on couples who struggle with infertility, remain unmarried, or choose not to have children. Encouraging marriage and parenthood should always be accompanied by compassion, respect and pastoral sensitivity.

Thirdly, do our congregations welcome the perceived mess, chaos and noise of children with open arms or do we prefer to have them in a corner where they do not ‘disturb’ the flow of service or the comfort of other members?  Perhaps, our churches can help build intergenerational communities where older members can mentor younger parents, while grandparents can be supported in their caregiving roles, and families can find a wider “church family” to walk alongside them.   St Paul writes, “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ” (Galatians 6:2).

The Church’s contribution to Singapore’s fertility challenge is about helping to create a community where families are supported, children are cherished, parents are strengthened, and every generation can flourish together.

Yours in Christ,
